Cervical Cancer Elimination
Cervical Cancer Elimination
24% of all adult female deaths in Bangladesh are due to cancers. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer and the third leading cause of death among women, with 10,000 new cases every year and 6,000 deaths. The numbers may be much higher. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates over 50 million Bangladeshi women are at high risk of developing Cervical Cancer, which is a significant health burden in Bangladesh. It disproportionately affects women in both urban and rural areas.
Ongshi Pilot Project:
Ongshi will join the Rotary Club of Dhaka in their effort to screen and vaccinate for cervical cancer. In addition, Breast cancer screening is also done as needed.
We adopt a village, screen for cervical cancer and vaccinate.
- Vaccination: Incepta pharmaceuticals cervical cancer vaccine is available for girls over 9. Only one vaccine for a girl is needed for a lifetime to avoid having cervical cancer. Vaccine is recommended to be given to girls before puberty. Incepta has agreed to sell the vaccines for TK 2000 per vaccine.
- Our goal is to administer the vaccine for approximately 300 girls in a village.
- Screening: With our partner organization, we will adopt a village and screen for cervical cancer. We announce by miking that we will be screening in the village and all prospects should come for the screening at a set location.
- We attempt to screen 100% of the eligible population (women) of the village and then move on to the next target village. A small village may have approximately 300 eligible women to screen.
- If any patient gets a positive result from screening, next steps are considered to administer treatment locally or transfer patient to hospital for treatment (Cost are not included in this project)
Budget:
- Vaccination cost for 1 person is appx $15
- USD 15 X 300 = $4500
- Screening cost for 1 person is appx $5.
- USD 5 X 300 = $1500
With a total $6000, we can screen and vaccinate a small village as our pilot. If successful, we can adopt more villages, each with a similar budget and move to the next one.
